The most common cause of deafness in childhood is due to a condition called “glue ears”. Thick glue like fluid collects in the ear and cause partial deafness. Sometimes this is associated with repeared ear infection, earache and fever. Fortunately the condition is temporary and mostly resolves with medical treatment or spontaneously.
In some cases the condition persists and then the child may need a minor surgical operation of glue from the ears and insertion of ventilation tubes called grommets.
There are many other causes of deafness in children. Some of these are by birth and most of these are due to nerve deafness and therefore permanent. These children need early assessment and if required a hearing aid should be fitted. Earlier these children are diagnosed and helped the better it is for their speech, language, social and emotional development.
Snoring, mouth breathing labored and noisy breathing restless sleep and in reverse cases breathing lapses (sleep apnea) in children is mostly due to large obstructive tonsils or adenoids or both. Whereas tonsils are at the back of the throat, adenoids are similar tissue situated at the back of nose. This type of breathing disorder can result in day time tiredness, poor concentration and poor performance at school along with poor growth. Removal of tonsils and adenoids is recommended for children with this kind of disorder.
The other most common reason for removing tonsils and adenoids is repeated infections called tonsillitis with fever sore throat, difficulty of swallowing, bad breath, headache, tiredness and sometimes rash these children miss school and need antibiotics frequently. It is therefore recommended for removes these focus of infection s for overall well being of the child.
Most common symptoms of nasal allergy are nasal congestion that is blocked nose, sneezing, runny nose which is mainly watery, itchy nose and eyes, sometimes headaches and facial pain. 70 % of the nasal; allergies are caused by house dust and house dust mite- a tiny creative that lives in dust. Other common reasons are grass and trees, pollens, main outdoor allergies. While pets, dogs, cats, birds, apart from house dust mite are main indoor allergies.
