Halitosis: Understanding the Root Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath which is also called Halitosis, is a social stigma and may be indication of some serious underlying disease.

Bad odors from mouth are disturbing symptoms and it varies depending upon its source or underlying cause. Some people worry disproportionately even though, they have little or negligible mouth smell.

Some of the common causes for bad breath are:
  • Food: Eating of some foods for examples onion, garlic, eggs, and spices can cause bad breath.
  • Tobacco products: Smoking is one of the common causes of bad breath, which can be eliminated after smoking to discontinue.
  • Poor oral/ dental hygiene: Brushing and flossing of the teeth may prevent the food being stuck in teeth. Consequently, avoid such problems. Bacterial plaque on the teeth/tongue in case of poor oral hygiene may cause bad oral smell (breath).
  • Dry mouth: Saliva is a natural cleanser of the mouth. Xerostomia or dry mouth may cause serious oral diseases including bad smell.
  • Medication: Certain type of medication may indirectly cause the bad breath.
  • Oral infections: Mouth ulcers, dental abscesses, may be causing bad breath.
  • Nasal/ throat infections: Bad breath can occasionally cause by certain type of nasal/throat infections ex. Tonsillitis.
  • Stomach, kidney or liver diseases: May cause specific type of oral smell for ex. Cirrhosis of liver exhibit mousy smell.
