Can A Severely Hurting Tooth Be Saved!

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT- Root canal treatment or also referred to as Endodontic Therapy is a procedure in which the infected nerves inside the carious painful tooth is removed and the tooth is saved by filling up the roots and the crown of the tooth.

Indications of Root Canal
  • Severe pain on chewing or biting
  • Severe pain on taking hot or cold drinks
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • A pimple on the gums with discharge
  • Swollen face or tender gums
  • Deep pockets in the gums due to calculus deposits
  • Trauma causing fracture of the tooth
PROCEDURE
  • Local anesthesia (injection) is given to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues.
  • All the decayed tooth structure is removed and the pulp chamber is accessed with the help of a small drill.
  • The root canals are reached with the help of small files the necrotic, infected nerve is removed.
  • The roots are then cleaned, shaped and sterilized to receive the filling.
  • The toots are then filled with the rubber like biocompatible material and later the crown of the tooth is filled with the tooth colored filling material.

During the course of root canal the dentist may prescribe some antibiotics and pain relieving medicines depending upon the severity of infection. The whole process may take 2-3 visits to the doctor depending on the case and is relatively painless procedure.

After the root canal is done it is advised to cover the tooth with a cap or a crown made up of porcelain or zirconium, as removing the nerve supply blood supply of the tooth makes it brittle.
